Hearing Aids And Tinnitus

John, one of my patients came to my office this summer for an audiological evaluation. His main complaint was a loud noise in his ears. This is called tinnitus. He said that this "high-pitched constant noise was so loud that no one should be able to tilt the ear next to his and listen too." The rumor is affecting your day job, he worked in an office is very quiet and very difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. John said it was little irritable temperament, and simply "most ol cranky at the time, because he could not escape the noise had come to focus on steadily.

Tinnitus is a phantom head or ear noise that the person perceives the sound without the presence of an external source. Tinnitus may be in one or both ears. May be present all the time or come and go. You can change the tone and volume. Tinnitus can be very low in volume and difficult to hear unless the atmosphere is quiet and people stop to "listen to it." However, others report that tinnitus is very high, making it difficult to hear conversations, TV, movies, or even your own thoughts. Some describe the sound as a ringing, hissing, buzzing, chirping, frying, cricket / cricket / mosquito insect noises, pulsing, whooshing, and some even listen to music. (Hopefully, a type of music they like!) Tinnitus may begin after exposure to noise trauma, head or neck in a car accident / sports injury, ear infection, sinusitis, after taking medication that are toxic to the ear / hearing, certain tumors of the auditory nerve or facial deformities in the jaw, and even smoking. It is sometimes difficult to remember that everything we put in our body enters the bloodstream and passes through our auditory system. Many diseases such as heart disease and diabetes may be associated with tinnitus.

As always pointed in the practice of audiology: Please use hearing protection! Everyone in my family laughs at me, but I pass out earplugs, even in the church if the music is too loud for my comfort. I can wear ear protection when mowing the lawn, use a fan or a hammer, or attend a sports function, because even serious damage to clap ears. I feel you should wear hearing protection when using a hair dryer. I am an audiologist, so it's my job to be extreme when it comes to protecting the delicate inner ear hair cells.

John was able to vent with two large CIC hearing aids. He had normal hearing from 250 2kHz, dropping to a mild hearing loss / moderate high frequency of 8.3 kHz. With this product are able to amplify only 8.3 kHz. It was not until five weeks, but John does not report tinnitus while using the AIC. I have found in recent years that approximately 6 out of 10 hearing aid report users' freedom or a reduction in tinnitus when using headphones. With this in mind, I always want to try this with an open mind and free breathing in the hope that patients with tinnitus is a relief from amplification. At night, when he returned the ring to remove the headphones, suggesting that John used a masking header (a device that emits waves of sea, rain, thunder, forests, sounds, etc.) with a pillow accessories his wife is not in the ocean with him all night. She appreciates the silence and John loves sleeping "on the beach."

There have been some encouraging preliminary reports of a major manufacturer of hearing aids that some of its latest digital hearing aid technology has actually provided some users several days of relief from tinnitus. These are people without significant hearing loss, but steady moderate to severe tinnitus. Apparently, the manufacturer meets its products in a manner similar to a loss of high frequency hearing, using the AIC with large ventilation. Their conclusions will be drawn and released sometime in the near future. If this proves to be valid, this will be a big step forward for those who suffer from tinnitus.
